Traditional learning platforms often struggle with personalization, engagement, and adaptability. Many students face difficulties in accessing content that aligns with their learning pace, while educators lack actionable insights into student progress.

Masomo AI, is an AI-driven EdTech platform designed to enhance personalized learning experiences for students. The platform leverages artificial intelligence to deliver tailored educational content, optimize learning paths, and provide insightful analytics for educators and learners.

Our starting point was both exciting and difficult. Internet penetration in many African communities is growing, but access is uneven. Students juggle multiple demands — school, chores, sometimes work, which means learning has to be flexible, lightweight and intuitive.

Our starting point was both exciting and difficult. Internet penetration in many African communities is growing, but access is uneven. Students juggle multiple demands — school, chores, sometimes work, which means learning has to be flexible, lightweight and intuitive.

I conducted interviews with secondary and university students, mapped out their study routines, and highlighted pain points:


Information overload – students jumped between WhatsApp groups, PDFs, and random YouTube videos.

Low trust in online resources – they worried about fake or outdated materials.

Interface barriers – clunky apps made it harder for them to stay focused.

To scale, we created a minimal but flexible design system. Clean typography supported long study sessions, a calm palette reduced eye strain, and reusable components like subject cards and progress trackers kept the product cohesive.

Continuous prototyping revealed what worked and what didn’t:


Navigation had to be one-thumb friendly.

Bookmarks became essential for revision.

Students valued examples alongside answers.

From the very beginning, it was clear that design wasn’t just about polished visuals — it was about removing friction.

We stripped down onboarding to just the essentials, cutting away the tedious forms that had frustrated students in the past. Study flows were designed to be quick and intuitive, evolving over time through feedback.

Practice was where theory stuck — or got lost. To help students retain what they learned, we designed Flashcards with both automatic and manual modes.

The Directory feature allowed learners to create folders and collections, saving everything from notes to articles in one place. Better still, they could make collections public — turning personal organization into communal knowledge banks.

We noticed students often studied in isolation, which made motivation harder to sustain. To solve this, we created Spaces — peer-to-peer communities where learners could form study groups, share insights, and hold each other accountable.
